The Wizard of Oz 2001

Here we are again - another school year and another school production. This year the school decided to put on a production of some character, the "Wizard of Oz". The performances took place on Wednesday 24th, Thursday 25th and Friday 26th of January 2001 at Alcester High School Technology College at 7:00 pm. There was a Matinee on Wednesday afternoon for the pupils at local primary schools.

The Director was Miss Coyle and the Musical Director was Mr Sagi. The two teachers combined to produce such an inspired performance from all the people involved. From Miss Dorothy Gale herself [Jenny Buxton] too the famous Munchkins [who almost didn't make it through lack of Minis for transport]. Adrenalin was running high backstage as Miss Buckthorpe [Choreographer] will tell you. But all of this was turned into pure action on stage. Costumes and makeup were vital for effect. Mrs Beeson [Costumes] and Mrs Broad [Head of Makeup] did a really good job and passed expectations again. The colourful scenery [Mr Yarrington and Co] blended perfectly with the colourful performances from our now established Actors and Actresses. The Crew worked together like a well-tuned piano and the unsung heroes should be heard. Without them we wouldn't have had a production at all. So I would like to thank anyone and everyone who helped in this year's production. Everybody gave 100% THANKYOU.
Tin Man
All of the characters, main or not, gave a polished performance. The main four characters were very well chosen. The star Dorothy was played by Jenny Buxton and her performances proved to be very popular. Now I played the Scarecrow. My name is Jonathan Berry. I worked well with the whole crew. I believe from different sources that I gave a lively character performance. Sam Maloney played the Tin-man, who did more than was asked by achieving a sympathetic performance. I was personally happy to see him receive his Heart.
Cast 1 Cast 2
You couldn't have picked a better man to play the Cowardly Lion. Alex Johnstone produced a hilarious show stopping performance. I am proud to have worked with two really talented Actors and a very talented Actress. Louise Warmington's performance was wicked [in more ways than one]. She made a memorable witch. She made the rest of us feel small at times. Some special effects were used for the Wizard. A projection was used of his image onto a wall and a distorted voice made him sound scary and very much the part. Well done Damion Lewis for being such a good sport. The whole cast deserves credit for the achievements made. All I heard after the show was to our credit, so the spellbound audience obviously got their money's worth. But our school does have a reputation for excellent productions and this year was apparently no exception.
Witch of the East
The lively musical had some memorable moments. My own favourite being at the beginning of Act 2., where the Ozian Army show how incompetent they really are [that's in the play only]. Well done lads. A personal favourite of mine was at the end of the show when we all received our hearts desires [literally for the Tin-man]. As an added bonus the Wizard chooses me to rule over The Land Of Oz in his absence.
We have set the standard for productions to come. I have no fear of a let down next year, because I have seen a willingness to succeed from all of our up and coming actors and actresses, who all showed promise for the future. I can't wait for next year's production. You might see me again, who knows. I won't forget this production - it was memorable. Everybody deserves a diploma, not just the Scarecrow !!!!
