Art
and Design is both a form of communication and a means of expression of ideas
and feelings. It is a practically based subject which complements the more academic
subjects in the curriculum. It is especially concerned with the development
of visual perception and aesthetic appreciation.
At Key Stage 3 all pupils study Art and Design, covering the requirements
of National Curriculum. At Key Stage 4 Art and Design is a popular optional
subject, studied to G.C.S.E. level.
Art fosters and encourages the
development of personal and organisational skills, art appreciation, observation,
imagination, expression, creativity and practical skills. These skills are
developed through drawing, painting, printing, graphics, mixed media, ceramics,
three dimensional work, computer imagery and the use of materials, tools and
equipment.
Through Art and Design pupils are
encouraged to develop individual styles of work, to express themselves freely
using a variety of materials and processes, think, plan and develop organisational
skills through set tasks and topics, evaluate their work and meet deadlines
and targets.
Pupils are also encouraged to broaden
their general knowledge and understanding by studying many world artists,
designers and craftspeople both past and present.
All pupils are expected to keep
a sketchbook/notebook and to make regular use of it in and outside lesson
time for personal drawings, notes, sketches and ideas. Art and Design is a
popular subject, a valuable part of the curriculum and can be enjoyed by all
pupils regardless of their artistic ability |
