Mathematics
is a compulsory subject and each pupil studies the subject for five lessons
each fortnight.
In all years pupils are taught
in groups appropriate to their ability and movement between these groups can
occur at several points throughout the school year. Pupils with special needs
are catered for by the provision of support staff for each year group.
Pupils study a course designed
by departmental staff backed up by a variety of textbooks, worksheets, practical
activities and computerised tasks. Investigational and practical methods are
encouraged at every opportunity to allow pupils to apply mathematics, as they
would do in real life. The department has an Integrated Learning System, which
is designed to help pupils overcome any difficulties that they may have with
particular topics. Pupils have access to this system once per fortnight during
lessons or at any lunchtime.
During Key Stage 3 pupils are assessed
every half term to enable close monitoring of their performance. Sections
of these assessments contain a mental test. Pupils at the end of Key Stage
3 will be entered at a Tier appropriate to the group they are in and their
performance in internal assessments. These Tiers vary from Tier 6 - 8 to Tier
3 - 5. At Key Stage 4 pupils will be entered for OCR's GCSE Mathematics. This
course contains Coursework and a Terminal examination at a level appropriate
to a pupil's ability. Less able pupils will follow a course with a greater
emphasis on practical and individual assessments. |
