The department offers a Co-ordinated Science Course, which includes: -

Sc1 - Scientific enquiry
Sc2 - Life Processes and Living Things
Sc3 - Materials and their Properties
Sc4 - Physical Processes

Students at Key Stage 3 (Years 7 - 9) follow a tailor-made course developed by staff within the department. Students at Key Stage 4 (Years 10 - 11) follow "The Stages Assessment Co-ordinated Science" course leading to TWO G.C.S.E's at the end of Year 11.

The separate sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Physics are offered at the end of Year 9. Pupils who follow the separate sciences do not follow the 'Double Award' course.

Note: Pupils who opt for the separate sciences must do all three subjects.

Rural Science is offered as a separate option in Years 10 and 11.

Teaching groups in Years 7 to 9 are blocked into two bands. These two bands are then set by ability.

Teaching groups in Years 10 and 11 are blocked together and set by ability.

This enables the department to rotate groups, allowing the pupils to be taught by specialist teachers. This has proven advantageous to both pupils and the teaching staff.

Students are expected to achieve as high a standard as possible and to this end the work set is related to the level of ability of the students. Students are closely monitored throughout their career so that they can be placed in the appropriate class with regard to their ability, effort and attitude.

Throughout the course pupils learning is enhanced by access to modern technology. Pupils are encouraged to use computers for word processing, data search, data handling and data logging using sense and control equipment. Also throughout the science course visits are arranged to places of scientific interest.
